Description

These festive Christmas Wreath Cookies are soft, buttery sugar cookies topped with creamy green frosting and decorated with colorful holiday candies. Perfect for holiday parties, cookie exchanges, or as a beautiful homemade gift, these cookies are a delightful way to celebrate the season!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Cookies:

  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • ½ teaspoon salt

For the Green Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Green food coloring (gel or liquid)

For Decoration:

  • Assorted candies (like M&Ms, mini candy canes, and edible pearls)
  • Red and white striped peppermint candies
  • Edible glitter (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Mix Dry Ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  • Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large bowl, cream softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add Egg and Extracts: Beat in egg, vanilla, and almond extract until combined.
  • Combine Ingredients: Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  • Shape the Cookies: Roll out dough to ¼-inch thickness. Use a large round cutter to cut out cookies, and a smaller cutter to make the wreath center.
  • Bake: Place on baking sheets and bake for 8-10 minutes until edges are lightly golden. Cool on wire racks.
  • Make the Frosting: Beat softened butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla. Add green food coloring until desired color is reached.
  • Decorate: Using a piping bag with a star tip, pipe frosting around the cookie edges in a wreath pattern. Decorate with candies and edible glitter for extra cheer!

Notes

  • For softer cookies, remove them from the oven when edges are just beginning to turn golden.
  • The dough can be prepared up to 2 days in advance. Wrap tightly and store in the refrigerator.
  • For a nut-free option, omit the almond extract and replace it with an additional teaspoon of vanilla extract.
