Description

This Apple Butter Recipe is sweet, spiced, and velvety smooth, perfect for spreading on toast, swirling into oatmeal, or using as a glaze. Simple to make with just a handful of ingredients, this homemade apple butter brings all the cozy flavors of fall into your kitchen.

Ingredients

  • 6 pounds apples (peeled, cored, and chopped)
  • 2 cups sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Place apples in a slow cooker or large pot. Cook on low heat for 4-6 hours, stirring occasionally, until apples are soft.
  • Puree the cooked apples using an immersion blender or food processor until smooth.
  • Stir in sugar, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and salt. Continue cooking on low heat for 8-10 hours, stirring occasionally, until thickened and darkened.
  • Stir in vanilla extract during the last few minutes of cooking.
  • Allow to cool before transferring to jars or containers.

Notes

  • Adjust sugar based on the sweetness of your apples or substitute with brown sugar or maple syrup for a richer flavor.
  • Use a mix of apple varieties for the best flavor balance.
  • To make it shelf-stable, process jars in a water bath canner.
  • Store in the fridge for up to 3 weeks or freeze for up to 6 months.
