Description

Discover a fun and creative way to transform a simple watermelon into delightful star-shaped pieces! Perfect for summer gatherings, these watermelon stars are easy to make, visually stunning, and sure to impress. Follow these simple steps to add a touch of magic to your table.

Ingredients

  • One medium seedless watermelon (about 5 pounds)

Instructions

  1. Cut the Watermelon in Half: Place the watermelon on a large cutting board. Using a chef’s knife, carefully cut the watermelon in half.
  2. Flip the Watermelon Cut-Side Down: Work with one half of the watermelon at a time. Flip the watermelon half so the cut side is down on the cutting board.
  3. Trim Away the Rind: Using your chef’s knife, start cutting away the rind. Begin by slicing off a thin piece of the rind, just down to the pink flesh. Continue making slices around the watermelon to remove all the rind. Be thorough and trim off any remaining bits of rind to leave just the edible pink flesh.
  4. Slice the Watermelon: Cut the watermelon into 1/2 to 1-inch thick slices. The thickness will depend on your preference and the size of your cookie cutter. Thicker slices make for more substantial stars.
  5. Punch Out Stars with the Cookie Cutter: Take your star-shaped cookie cutter and press it into each watermelon slice to cut out star shapes. Try to get as many stars as possible from each slice to minimize waste.
  6. Repeat with the Other Half: Repeat the trimming and slicing process with the other half of the watermelon. Punch out more stars until you have a beautiful collection of watermelon stars.

Notes

  • Safety First: Watermelons can be slippery, so take your time and ensure a firm grip on your knife and the fruit.
  • Choosing the Watermelon: Opt for a seedless watermelon to make the process smoother.
  • Even Slices: Aim for even slices to ensure all your stars are consistent in thickness.
