Description

These Southern Candied Sweet Potatoes are a warm and cozy side dish, perfect for the holidays or any meal that needs a sweet, spiced, and buttery twist. Tender sweet potato slices are smothered in a luscious brown sugar syrup, flavored with cinnamon and nutmeg, and optionally topped with golden marshmallows for a nostalgic, indulgent treat!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced into 1/4-inch rounds
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional: mini marshmallows for topping

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Prepare the sweet potatoes: Peel the sweet potatoes and slice them into 1/4-inch rounds.
  • Make the syrup: In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and water. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring occasionally until the sugar is fully dissolved.
  • Combine sweet potatoes and syrup: Arrange the sweet potato slices in a greased baking dish and pour the syrup mixture over them, ensuring every slice is coated.
  • Bake: Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. After that, remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are tender and the syrup is bubbly.
  • Finish with vanilla and marshmallows: Stir in the vanilla extract. If desired, sprinkle the mini marshmallows on top and return to the oven for 5 minutes, just until the marshmallows are golden brown.
  • Serve: Let the dish cool slightly before serving and enjoy this warm, sweet delight!

Notes

  • Storage: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Make Ahead: You can prepare the dish ahead of time and reheat it before serving.
  • Variations: Add chopped pecans for some crunch, or try a citrus twist by mixing in a little orange zest!
  • Vegan option: Swap butter for a plant-based alternative and use vegan marshmallows.
